What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition that affects the median nerve—a nerve that runs from your forearm through a narrow tunnel in the wrist and into your hand. When tissues in that area become irritated, inflamed, or swollen, they can put pressure on the nerve, causing pain and dysfunction.

The median nerve is responsible for sensations in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and half of the ring finger. So when CTS develops, people often notice:

  • Tingling or numbness in the fingers

  • Burning pain in the wrist or hand

  • Weakness in grip strength

  • Dropping objects unexpectedly

  • Pain that radiates into the forearm or up toward the shoulder

  • Symptoms that worsen at night or first thing in the morning

If left untreated, CTS can lead to long-term nerve damage, muscle weakness, and decreased hand function.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Many of our patients at Sioux Center Chiropractic don’t realize that daily habits—not just injuries—can lead to carpal tunnel symptoms. The most common contributing factors include:

  • Repetitive hand movements (typing, texting, factory work, power tools)

  • Improper ergonomics at your desk, especially with keyboards and mouse use

  • Poor wrist positioning during sleep or computer use (bent or flexed wrists)

  • Tight forearm muscles that restrict mobility and compress surrounding nerves

  • Pregnancy, thyroid conditions, diabetes, or autoimmune issues that cause fluid retention and inflammation

At our clinic, we focus on both treating symptoms and correcting the root causes—including biomechanics, posture, workplace setup, and repetitive stress.

8 Ways to Prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Prevention starts with awareness and small, consistent changes. Here are eight tips we share with patients in Sioux Center:

  1. Keep Wrists in Neutral
Avoid excessive flexion or extension of your wrists. Use a keyboard pad or ergonomic mouse setup.

  2. Take Mini Breaks Often
Pause every 20–30 minutes to stretch your hands, shake out your wrists, and gently move your shoulders.

  3. Use Lighter Grip Pressure
Don’t grip tools or utensils too tightly. Opt for pens and devices with thicker grips when possible.

  4. Check Your Posture
Slouched shoulders and forward head posture put strain on your neck and upper limbs. Sit tall with your ears over your shoulders.

  5. Stay Warm
Cold temperatures make muscles and joints stiffer. Keep your workspace warm or wear gloves when needed.

  6. Stretch Daily
Perform gentle wrist, forearm, and shoulder stretches to keep tissues mobile.

  7. Support Your Overall Health
Stay hydrated, eat anti-inflammatory foods, and manage blood sugar levels to reduce tissue inflammation.

  8. Sleep with Straight Wrists
Avoid tucking your hands under your pillow or chest. Wrist braces at night can help maintain a neutral position.

How We Treat Carpal Tunnel at Sioux Center Chiropractic

Our approach is non-invasive, personalized, and effective. We tailor each care plan to your symptoms, job, lifestyle, and goals.

1. Chiropractic Adjustments

We assess and adjust the wrist, elbow, shoulder, and cervical spine to reduce nerve pressure and improve joint mobility. If your carpal tunnel symptoms are being worsened by postural misalignment or neck nerve root irritation, we address that first.

2. Manual Therapy & Rehab

Our team provides hands-on soft tissue work and guides you through specific wrist and forearm mobility exercises, grip retraining, and nerve glides. Rehab is key for long-term relief.

3. Shockwave Therapy

Radial and focused shockwave therapy helps break down scar tissue, stimulate blood flow, and promote healing in the affected tissues—without the need for injections or downtime.

4. Laser Therapy

Low-level laser therapy reduces inflammation, accelerates nerve healing, and provides relief at the cellular level. It's completely painless and pairs well with rehab or adjustments.

5. Ergonomic & Movement Coaching

We analyze how you sit, work, sleep, and move—and show you how small changes can take pressure off your hands and wrists. This is especially helpful for desk workers, athletes, and manual laborers.
